ESR Backup News and Updates

March 23, 2006

Version 0.99B Release 1 has been released.

This version is a major bug fix release, there have also been many optimizations done to the code to improve performance. Here is a list of changes in this release.

  •  Fixed a bug in the configuration parsing which would break the email reporting.
  • Fixed a bug which would cause the backup to fail if it attempted to backup a directory with some special characters in it.
  • Fixed a bug in the ftp functions which caused ESR to exit on a FTP failure without returning an error.
  • Fixed a timestamp issue where the date in the email reports would show Jan 1, 1970 on some systems.
  • Optimized the backup engine code and cleaned up some old references that were no longer needed.
  • Added better support for upgrades, ESR now includes a script to preserve your settings when upgrading.

Please note I will no longer be adding features to the 0.9x versions, all new features will be added to the 1.0 release which is currently in development. Version 1.0 will still be the easy to use backup program you know but you will have the ability to  turn on some advanced features if you need them. I will also be releasing a few add-ons for ESR Backup these add-ons will allow remote backup and centralized management along with a GUI to assist in backup job setup and restores. With version 1.0 in development I need beta testers for this new code. If you are interested in testing the next major release of ESR Backup please post a message on the ESR Backup message board.

Thanks for using ESR Backup

Shawn Scott March 23, 2006

It has been some time since I released an update for ESR Backup. I have had many personal preoccupations including the birth of my first son, a change of jobs, purchase of a new house, and a relocation to a new state.  With that said I would also like to let everyone know I am still actively developing ESR Backup and have spent the last few months fixing reported bugs and optimizing the code. I have also began working on ESR Backup 1.0 which will incorporate many new features and improvements, many of these have come from suggestions and reports from users of ESR Backup. Some of the changes I have planned for this release are.

  •  Flexible and fully configurable backup schedule.
  •  Ability to perform Full, Differential or Incremental backups.
  •  Configurable backup archive retention
  •  Web based GUI for setting up backup jobs
  •  Multiple Server Support

I will only release bug fixes for the 0.99b code and will focus my efforts on the 1.0 release.

If you are interested in beta testing the ESR code and are willing to report back to me any errors or problems with the code please please post a message on the ESR Backup message board.
